November 15, 2009 Indiana Art Auction

There were 140 paintings for sale at the "Jacksons Auction and Real Estate Company" held on November 15th, 2009 in Indianapolis, IN. Many Indiana artists were represented in the auction, including Hoosier Group artists Theodore Clement Steele, William Forsyth, and Otto Stark. In addition, Brown County Artists Claude Curry Bohm, Dale Philip Bessire, Edward K. Williams, Carl Graf , Varaldo J. Cariaini, and George LaChance were among other notable artists.

Auction attendees were provided the opportunity to view a major oil on board by Glenn Cooper Henshaw (1884 to 1946) measuring 25x34. Although not titled by the artist, the painting was of a New York scene and Signed Lower Right (SLR) “21 'NY”. Very few Henshaw oil's come up for auction and certainly not one of this caliber. Several bidders were interested in purchasing the Henshaw with bidder competition very strong. At the end, the winning bidder left with a very nice painting for $27,000.

Another work by well known Brown County landscape painter Edward K Williams (1870 to 1950) was also for sale. E. K. Williams moved to Brown County in 1926 but had spent time painting in the area prior to his arrival. Williams exhibited at the Hoosier Salon from 1928 to 1949 with the exception of one year. The 16x20 oil on canvas titled "On Cheerful Hill" was a classic Brown County winter scene similar to those painted by other brown county artists of the time. This particular painting caught the eye of several bidders with the bidding topping out at $27,000.

Two Theodore Clement Steele (1847 to 1926) paintings were represented. One was a 20x16 oil on canvas portrait of a young boy unsigned but with authenticity . The other a 22x32 oil on canvas SLR 1917 and titled “Through the Clearing” sold for $11,500.

Two nice Dale P. Bessire (1882 to 1974) paintings were also in the auction.. An oil on canvas titled “Winter in the Hills” measured 20x24 and was Signed Lower Left (SLL) brought $5,000. A very well done Bessire painting of a fall scene with large barn, measuring 20x24 SLR and titled “Old Derelict Barn” went for $4,900.
